The project in Beit Sira is a pilot project and was furthered in cooperation between the Joint Service Council for Solid Waste Management and the municipality of Montreuil in France. Based on the studies made by the Technical and the Public Awareness team of the JSC the desired objectives where to make a quantum leap through improvement on the current situation of solid waste management in the village through the technical and awareness activities during 2011 and 2012 to improve the process of combining the initial waste; that was accomplished by providing each family with a plastic container to be used by the and it will be their responsibility. Based on its twinning agreement with the city of Montreuil (France) Bet Sira received a financial donation by Montreuil to buy 240 liters (L) plastic containers to serve the whole village. Since the main objective of the JSC is to suppport and improve the solid waste management in the Governorate it assists as well bet Sira in that regard. After the approval from all sides, 520 containers were purchased with total cost of 139,210 NIS and handed over to the inhabitants of Bet Sira.
These technical activities are accompanied by awareness activities which targeted different groups of women and men as representatives of the village through the implementation of the awareness and training on the composition of compost from organic waste in homes. and targeting the women’s center to train women on how to exploit the waste in their homes for re-use in works of art that can boost their financial situation. And targeting school students through lectures and implementation of practical activities to be trained on the distinction between the types of waste and how benefit from it in their daily activities and the importance of waste minimization by presenting a cartoon movie produced by the Council which aims to raise and strengthen the culture of “reduce and reuse waste”.
